It's Time For More GIRL TALK!

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

Joining the tradition of releasing music untraditionally, Illegal Art and Gregg of Girl Talk are rollin' out the brand new album, Feed The Animals, with a "pay what you want" fee. That's right, pay anything you want here, to get that hot new album. But if you drop atleast $5, you also get a special big mp3 of of all the songs connected as essentially one long party hog! The tracks were meant to be all hooked up. If you drop $10, then you are pre-ordering the CD which rolls out in September.

Feed The Animals is Girl Talk's 4 full length with lots of popular songs mashed out with older songs, beats, and loops. Check and stream the album here. There are some really dope things about this album that have been growing on me throughout the day. With the amount of songs that are mashed in, you'll definitely find something you like!

The Crosby Grand Opening Weekend!

Friday, May 23, 2008

Last Night hit off the official grand opening weekend of The Crosby, a kickin' new venue-restaurant-bookstore-bar in the Santa Ana Artists Village opened by Free The Robots. Our boy Co.Fee and his crew My Hollow Drum (M.H.D.) were providin' some fresh beats and lucky you, they're droppin' frequent on Thursdays. Be sure to check out Co.fee's new joint, No Borders.

Some of the hardworkin' chef's bringing you delicious food rollin' out hard til 1:30am! What?! Bookmark it in your brains for your late night growls.

The most appropriate decor; 1 whole wall full of old stereo boomboxes. I love that old chrome looking plastic. Shiny shiny shiny shiny!

The bar bar with lots of Maria candles and of course a fat boombox atop.

More from the M.H.D. crew! Tonight The Crosby will be hosting the art works of Shepard Fairey who will also be spinnin' as DJ Diabetic. The many behind Obey Giant and tons of other artwork phenomenas. Better get their early, it's free and going to be action packed. Also Saturday, the final night of celebration, will feature Stussy sponsored Turnable Lab, live sets from Nosaj Thing and Free The Robots with others. Too many to name. Be sure to check all that out at The Crosby, 400 N. Broadway in Santa Ana!

Break It Down Now: The Valentine's Mix

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Let me be honest with you: I think Valentine's Day is really gross. Maybe it's due to the fact that I don't think red and pink go together, maybe it's because it gives guys unwarranted pressure to be uber romantic (which ends up being extremely cheesy and therefore, gross) or maybe because it's a day that tends to divide instead of unite (e.g. the couples vs. the singles). Whatever it is, it's gross.

But amidst the shenanigans that Valentine's Day brings, some good things arise, like chocolate and cookies and homemade valentines and cool mixes that people have been putting up on blogs. So here it is, a Valentine's day mix for you. But it's more than just a simple Valentine's Day Mix, it's more like, An-Exploration-of-Human-Relationships mix (super pretentious, I know).

Why? you ask? Because each song was picked purposefully to expose and reflect different aspects of human love: safety, joy, longing, jealousy, disappointment, desire... and not just the singular emotion of cheese-sauce feel-goodness.

But enough with the introspective musings. Go out and have your fun, eat your heart-shaped cupcakes and enjoy the music!

1. Tech Romance - Her Space Holiday
2. Proposition - Liz Janes (accompanied by Sufjan Stevens)
3. You Are My Joy - The Reindeer Section (yes that's Gary Lightbody on lead)
4. Look Up - Stars
5. Vito's Ordination Song - Sufjan Stevens
6. Heartbeats - The Knife
7. No Diggity cover - Klaxons
8. Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
9. Consequence - The Notwist
10.Bizarre Love Triangle cover - Frente!

Wednesday: Some New Music!

Wednesday, January 09, 2008

Hey Guys! We got some new music for you. We haven't done this in a while so we hope you can find something you like. Also we've received lots of e-mails about partnering and collaborating with BBQ...we are definitely open to it so if there are others out there, drop a line.

To start us off we got that new track from Hello, Blue Roses off of their soon to be released upcoming album "The Portrait Is Finished And I Have Failed To Capture Your Beauty..." Look out for it on Jan. 22nd from Locust Music.
Hello, Blue Roses - Sunny Skies

This is another one from the guy who brought you the mash between Jay-z, Beyonce, and T.I.
Cousin Cole - Let Me Clear My Throat

More of that crazy fast Electro post-punk dancey stuff from Cincinnati's Eat Sugar. They'll be releasing a debut self-titled EP very soon!
Eat Sugar - Black Eye

We've got two remixes from Caroline's new Murmurs Mixes which is a revisit remix of her '06 ambiminimalist release Murmurs featuring Lullatone, Brightest Feathers and many others.
Sunrise (Sunset Mix)
All I need (Owen Vallis Mix)

San Fran based duo The Dodos recently signed with NY's Frenchkiss, and they'll be kicking off a tour at the end of the month in support of their full length debut "Visiter"...that album drops in March but we got one of the tracks for you right here.
The Dodos - Fools

I love Sunny Day Sets Fire's experimental poppy psych sound which reminds me of a neo-Beach Boys! They've got a special remix EP coming out with contributions from such artists as CSS and The Cool Kids. Check out this song from their forthcoming full-length!
Sunny Day Sets Fire - Stranger

More Eastcoasters, Saint Bernadette's distinctive sound in "In The Ballroom" was actually recorded in the Bijou Theatre, a historic 1908 ballroom in Bridgeport, CT. Amzing mixing combined with beautiful melancholy vocals and songwriting is well packed into this last October release.
Saint Bernadette - Sidestep

This isn't necessarily a new released, but it's the 2007 released "Ink" full length from The Dining Rooms. Italians Stefano Ghittoni and Cesare Malfatti, create sophisticated cinematic jazz to groovy instrumental bossa. I love that keyboard right at the beginning...really sets the song.
The Dining Rooms - Appuntamento A Trieste

A great track from Oakland's HIJK combines some great pop with dancey keyboards and art rock all the way! I like the way they use their vocals, bouncing off eachother and sometimes echoey.
HIJK - Alibi

Okay folks, that's Wednesday for you!
