Tuesday, October 07, 2008

I was ultra excited to see this in my mailbox the other day.
Far Out Recordings have awesome compilations and this is probably my favorite from them. It's called Far Out Brazil and you can pick it up

This beautiful comp features dopestry from people like Sabrina Malheiros, Azymuth, the Ipanemas, Jazzanova, and Nicola Conte. Can't go wrong with Nicola. Check out more from Far Out! Luckily you don't need to hook that shipping up cause they haev digital downloads as well. Jawesome.

Ave.to's Three Way Intersection!
Thursday, June 19, 2008

D.C.'s
Avenue to is one of the most simply refreshing groups I've heard in a long while. Oddisee, Unknown and Kolai have created a seriously too perfect blend of hip hop, jazz, and soul with a not too heavy presence of electronics, but just enough. They've got all the vocalists and talents of a jazz band, the producing and sampling skills of any big hip hop DJ (better if you ask me), and a passion for gettin' the globe to groove to their sound.
Their debut album, Three Way Intersection, drops in mid July via
Asahra Music! It's going to be nothing short of amazing. We got a single for you and also check the video below of Sand to the Beach, you'll get a real overwhelming sense that they
truly love music.

Folky Sounds of Cellist Ben Sollee!
Tuesday, April 29, 2008
Sollee is part of the Sparrow Quartet but he's finally rockin' out a solo effort coming at you in June called
Learning To Bend! I dig his soulful jazzyvocals over this bluegrassy folk stuff made unique with his cellos all over the tracks. He was one of NPR's Top 10 Greatest Unkown Artists of 2007! You need to get the album and hear what he has to say. He has excellent songwriting skills including topics of politics. He has an attitude to empower people, there's hope in it, and it's got great classical expression. On May 13th he's also got a politically motivated EP style two-song-er called
If You’re Gonna Lead My Country and we got one of those tracks for you! Check it out!

Nostalgia 77 One Offs, Remixes & B-Sides!
Wednesday, April 09, 2008
Benedic Lambdin has seriously done a number, I believe 7 to be exact. His latest effort,
One Offs, Remixes, & B-Sides has instantly become one of my favorite albums of '08. The sheer collaborative background of this album, Lambdin's solid production and remixing skill, and the rarities of the Nostalgia 77 Octet all flex the enormous strength of this amazing compilation. I've had this album on some heavy rotation. This double disc is available now via the
Etch Shop as well as the vinyl EP. You're gonna get elusive instrumentals, chill beats and remixes from TM Juke, Bonobo, Povo, and vocals from Corinne Bailey Rae, Beth Rowley, Alice Russell and tons more.

Wong Kar Wai's My Blueberry Nights OST!
Monday, April 07, 2008
The internationally branded filmmaker,
Wong Kar Wai's first English speaking, U.S. shot film,
My Bluberry Nights opened Friday in Los Angeles! After a nomination for the Golden Palm and opener at the
60th Annual Cannes Filmfest last year in France, I was for sure this film would be picked up for distro sooner or later, and I was in ultra anticipation for it's release. I finally got to see the film and I thought it was totally awesome and I think what did it for me was
Norah Jones' character Elizabeth but I won't give anything away!
One really strong aspects before even viewing the film is the eclectic edge that the film's soundtrack really pushes on. This jazzy blues country pop collage is nothing short of an amazing album. With Wong filming all over the U.S. including LA to NY and Memphis in between, the tones and the imagery are completed with the likes of Norah Jones (duh!), Cat Power, Composer Ry Cooder and Gustavo Santaolalla (+more). Just a great soundtrack to hang out with.

Case Of The Mondays With Nicola Conte!
Monday, March 31, 2008

The Italian captain of all things cool has recently selected his favorites for
Viagem, a super dope compilation of '60s-'70s Brazilian Bosa Nova and samba jazz music from
Far Out Recordings. This is the first in a series of DJ compilations to help celebrate and promote 50 years of
Bossa Nova! That's right, 2008 marks the 50th anniversary of the birth of the beautiful Bossa Nova sound. Renowned producer
Nicola Conte has shown us once again that thoroughly reflecting on the orginal sound is very important and necessary. These renditions, done by some of the most amazing artists, are nothing short of vintage fresh. It's over 40 minutes of seminal traditional Brazilian World, vibrant Samba Jazz, Grooves, Afro-Samba, and energetic to soft instrumentals.
With Conte's innovative and experimental jazztronic development expertise, you can bet that this 15-track release is right on point. Check out Nicola's other releases via

"Oh, What A Curious Creature..."
Monday, November 26, 2007
For about two measures, discordant piano notes call and respond with its higher octave keys, reminding me of The Pearls composed by Jelly Roll Morton. It's as if two sides of thought are conversing with each other, a tete-a-tete of some sort, as the ascension and immediate descension then produce an accretion of appropriate melody, ornamenting and setting the stage for Emi Meyer to make her appearance.
The lyrics are suited for the seemingly poppy-yet-dark backdrop of minor keys. Jazz vocalists were the first in Western music to sing their own lyrics, (as opposed to classical traditions), and Emi Meyer does her part. The song talks of a "curious creature" otherwise known as an angel (or possibly herself), that has either fallen, or is lost in some manner. And the chorus with its repetition of a rhetorical question, "What do you think of me?" ironically makes the listener the curious creature instead. Nothing makes Jazz more complete than improvisation; the song ends with the piano decorating upon bass riffs for about a good 30 seconds.
Emi Meyer's jazz voice, with its deep tone and slight texture, is not only limited to low octaves, as evidenced when she pop glides into slightly higher notes on the "by myself" refrains. But in case those weren't enough to satisfy, her other piece One Good Song, starts out with a not-too-breathy but high key and delves into an a slightly loose singing style (but keeps its discipline as it fits the AABBCCCC form), making the song very relaxing and enjoyable to the listener. And we are definitely loving the accompanying drums and bass! Beautifull done...
Arrivederci (Curious Creature)
One Good Song (Curious Creature)
Sunrise (Live at Hotel Cafe)
Crafted Tone (from Magnolias EP)
If you're into these tracks go pick up the Curious Creature album here.
Currently, Meyer is studying and performing shows in Japan, where she was born. You're lucky if you can catch a live show! Lastly Check out videos here.

Mayra Andrade's Navega Debut Album!
Thursday, November 15, 2007

23 year old Mayra Andrade has made some
strange moves. She was born in Cuba, but she grew up in
Cape Verde, which is an
archipelago colonized by Portugal in the 15th Century off the western coast of Africa (this is a geography lesson). After moving around Africa and Europe she finds herself living and recording in Paris, France. Her music is a beautiful mixture of influences from Brazillian Sambas and jazz to French chanson (is there any other kind?!). She somehow keeps it mixed up while making the sound traditional and often times upbeat. The sunny vocals in
Cape Verdean Creole are well introduced with heavy poetic substance in the
lyrics.
Navega ("upon the waves") was debuted in 2006 when Mayra was 22! It is hard to tell that she's a newcomer. I was really thrown off when I found out this was her debut. We are definitely anticipating a sophomore out hopefully sometime in 2008. You can dance to her music or be listening on a train as a soundtrack to beautiful scenary. None of these songs are worth skipping over. Get the album
here. Stream Navega

Barker Block Goes Eclectic With Koop, Alice Russell, and Mocean Worker!
Sunday, November 11, 2007

This "
KCRW Presents" night was another excellent example of the creative efforts of various collaborators involved. We were thoroughly impressed. Parties involved:
KCRW,
Barker Block Lofts,
LearnAboutWine.com, and of course the awesome line-up. As an open house party, The Barker Block Lofts hosted Learn About Wine which well-hashed various a la cartes and an unlimited
Beer & Wine tasting with over 40 wines & microbrews. The
image gallery does no justice to the lofts inside. They were really neat, especially if you have a handle on getting some really amazing furniture. There was also an after party with a DJ spinning, art show and open bar. Before the music there was already an eventful night. This was an all around great way to promote several things in one well planned outdoor "venue."

To the Music! First Up:
Alice Russell sang with special guest
TM Juke which needless to say was nothing short of amazing. The entire set was acoustic and created a great show experience. She was interacting with the audience in a very intimate atmosphere and really having fun. It was pitch clear live.

Next up on the bill was
Mocean Worker or MoWo droppin' funky hiphop induced drum 'n' bass tunes from their summer release
Cinco De MoWo. Lots of Jazz and some Latin sounds were coming from an awesome band which included a bass trumpet and mutiple percussions.

After some short set-up
Koop was up. They performed another awesome set including Tonight, Waltz For Koop, Come To Me, Sumer Sun and I See A Different You! It was longer than the El Rey show with the quality! I never get tired of these songs. They started the set with Koop Islands with a blue lighting set.
Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen was on the microphone and I have to point out her outfit changes. We all think it really made the show that much better. Another beautiful multi-piece jazz orchestraic with lots of great solos and breaks! If you haven't heart any of these bands, we'll hook you up with some tracks, then Go out and get the albums!

I love these various artist mixes of lounge music gone digital. If you're into electronic and jazz, then these are no brainers. This is just another great mix of lounge. Electric Jazz Lounge reminds us of some of the earlier
Mocha Nova Cafe mixes over at

Stacey Kent's Breakfast On The Morning Tram!
Wednesday, October 10, 2007
As mentioned before, Jazz is continuing to thrive, and I am perfectly confident in Stacey Kent. Kent has over a decade worth contribution to jazz with 6 albums, several awards won and special arrangements with well-known artists. She does it even better 7th time around now with heavy hitters Blue Note Records who are responsible for releases of some of the greatest Jazz musicians since the 50s including Lady Ella, Duke Ellington and Sarah Vaughn. Her new album Breakfast On The Morning Tram is one of the best albums in jazz I've ever listened to. Extremely classy throughout with a quiet lounge twist, a little bit of that romantic attitude you get from noteworthy vocalists, and a well painted cool scene on several tracks. Husband Jim Tomlinson contributes writing and his well-crafted sax on several tracks. The amazing combination of the band, writers, and producers have really done it.
I highly recommend picking this album up which just came out last week! Get it here. Those french songs are amazing as well as a rendition of What A Wonderful World. And of course we have 3 songs from the new album, more than enough reasons to get it.
Stacey is touring, pretty much all the time, and currently she's mapped out over Europe but late November she'll be in NY. Be sure to get a ticket at the Birdland.

Luciano Sauza's New Bossa Nova
Tuesday, September 11, 2007

I haven't written much about Jazz for a while, but the truth is that the Jazz world is thriving and it's really good to see that. I see a broader appreciation for Jazz even though many of the greats have passed on. There isn't a day that passes by where I don't find myself wanting to look for other jazz lovers and see their reactions when they describe how a certain song makes them feel. I love it. I was sitting with a nice older lady at a Border's talking about her favorite 50s Ella Fitzgerald LPs and her sharing almost alleviated my alienation, conversely it was ironic because she was a lot older. Good stuff, I will go more often.
A part of Jazz that I love is the
Bossa Nova, literally "New Trend" which I won't even begin to go into the maticulous details of it's origins or it's 60s wave of immense popularity growth here in the U.S. Recently I was working on a television show and one of our audience guests was Brazillian there with his mother. I would name a popular Bossa favorite and she would sing it. It was a 20 minute dream come true. One of the reasons why I love it so much is because it tells not only stories of love, but of culture simply because it's birth is synonymous with the culture in which is "derived" from. I could go one for days.
There are so many awesome new artists and bands out there but I recently re-discovered the solace vocals of
Luciana Souza after digging around in search for something good. She is no lightweight. She's been nominated 3 times for a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocalist and continues to do work with renowned Jazz musicians. Her 7th album, "
The New Bossa Nova" is her first from
The Verve record label and probably one of her most interesting. It's definitely good but this seems to be an unfamiliar approach from Souza. The album has two originals and then several generally more jazz classic songs that are pushed with a Bossa twist. Souza also used a full band with her that takes on the task of re-creating classics and pop songs. It's something old but
different. These pop-bossa-remakes of Elliot Smith, Sting, Joni Mitchell and others are awesome for any Bossa Nova lover.
The album came out 3 weeks ago! I just got my copy today. If you like what you hear below, go out and get it. My favorite song on this album is her re-make of "Aguas de Marco" by the late legendary
Antonio Carlos Jobim. Again, it's just
good stuff.
Alright that's all for me, I'm heading out of the office with this fresh peach green tea. You gotta get some! Oh yea we also got a new mp3 player thanks to the genius of our new friend
Dan Kantor. Also check out this wonderful
review/article written by our friend Ernest which goes into detail about the Braziliam music documentary film "

Scott Herren's Back with Prefuse 73's Preparations!
Sunday, September 09, 2007

Barcelona based veteran producer,
Guillermo Scott Heren, has been working on everything for a long time, and now through
Warped Records, he's bringin' out Prefuse 73's next album,
Preparations. The album's single "Class Of 73 Bells" has already created tons of positive reviews for this upcoming album. For those of you who don't know, Prefuse 73 is one of the solo projects of Heren that has many elements and great combinations of jazz, down tempo, hip hop, dance, electronic, and glitch rock. Prefuse has collaborated with some of my favorites including Zero 7, MF DOOM, Beastie Boys and Kazumasa Hashimoto. Heren's incredible multi-instrumental talents and his thorough knowledge and appreciation for the electronics side has created yet another consistent album that boasts a complete mastering of sound.
Preparations drops October 23rd on Warped Records and it is highly recommended that you go pick up the physical album because in addition to the album, you'll also get "Ensembles" which is Heren rocking modern classicals self-composed with clarinets, cellos, pianos and the like. It's definitely going to be a great album. It gets better!! Heren is currently
touring and will be making stops all over the U.S. including the
Troubadour in LA on December 9th. You can go get that single now
here. Check out these tracks and make sure to pick up a copy on the 23rd!

LAST NIGHT: The Koop Islands Tour Live @ The El Rey Theatre, Los Angeles
Thursday, August 16, 2007

Many Thanks to our friends over at
KCRW for guest listin' us for last night's show. The
Koop, Swedes duo-Magnus Zingmark & Oscar Simonsson, along with a great line up, performed one of the best shows we've seen this summer! They performed
Waltz For Koop favorites like "Tonight" and "Baby" as well as several pieces from last year's
Koop Islands release.

The Line up: the lovely Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen on the Mic, Karl Frid on trumpet/percussions with his suspenders and slicked back hair, Mattias Stahl on Marimbas/Vibraphone with his amazing 4 stick mad skills, Martin Hoper on Bass, and Ola Bothzèn on the Drums...white tops, suspenders, added to the very classy show with an eclectic audience, not to mention the ambiance of the
El Rey. Other than this crunk-a-saurus too early-too much girl being totally wack!, it was a
beautiful show, and you can tell the band was havin' a great time which really adds a lot to the performance.

Best Moments: Hilde Louise came back out with a different dress, When the bass and drum were
feeding off eachother in a swingin' jam session with a layed out track from the Mac. Small Solos and last but not least, TWO encores!!! You just can't beat Two encores from the Koop. If you haven't heard of the Koop, no worries, we got you
covered. Think Jazz-a-tonic + Electro-acoustic + real live swingin' sounds, loungey vocals and you're halfway there.

Chill out to these tracks this weekend!

Emi Meyer, Nike+, and Weekend Rotation!
Friday, March 30, 2007
Last Wednesday we saw singer/ songwriter
Emi Meyer perform at the Montmarte Lounge in Hollywood. I have never been before and for a club it was huge with tons of swankin' expensive modern furniture, lighting and 3 bars! The show was a multiple act with art show, but I think the event didn't match the venue. Emi has a 4 song Ep trio style with drums, bass and a 'live at the Hotel Cafe' CD with 14 solo tracks. Emi recently
won 1st place in the Seattle-Kobe Jazz Vocalist competition and will be performing in a special concert in Kobe, Japan!
