Ave.to's Three Way Intersection!
Thursday, June 19, 2008

D.C.'s
Avenue to is one of the most simply refreshing groups I've heard in a long while. Oddisee, Unknown and Kolai have created a seriously too perfect blend of hip hop, jazz, and soul with a not too heavy presence of electronics, but just enough. They've got all the vocalists and talents of a jazz band, the producing and sampling skills of any big hip hop DJ (better if you ask me), and a passion for gettin' the globe to groove to their sound.
Their debut album, Three Way Intersection, drops in mid July via
Asahra Music! It's going to be nothing short of amazing. We got a single for you and also check the video below of Sand to the Beach, you'll get a real overwhelming sense that they
truly love music.

Imani's Back in Little Jackie
Tuesday, June 17, 2008

I'm just going to go ahead and say it, this duo is better than Winehouse and Lily Allen combined! WHAT! BBQ How can you say that?!?!? You're Stupid! Okay okay I know y'all are going to hate on me but the Celtics did win didn't they? haha. When I first rocked this on the laptop, I thought it had lots of Estelle, Gnarls and as mentioned before, comparable-to-beyond Lily Allen and Winehouse. Yea those guys have a lot of great tracks but I'm tellin' ya The Stoop,
Little Jackie's new album, is plain dope, and lotsa fun. It's something you'd throw in for your weekend party and be worry free of dull tracks.
Imani Coppola, who landed a deal with Columbia back in 97 when she was just 19, has come to succeed her previous shortlived fame. Now 29, the Brooklyn singer songwriter is fully equipped with programmer Adam Pallin (Boston grown produca!!), and together they have come on up with some ultra soulful catchy pop tunes. Their rappin' and Singin' with funky sampling and hip hop beats all over will be taking people's ears when The Stoop drops in July via
S-curve. Check out these two tracks and get ready to anticipate a super dope album!

Radiate Us With Neighborhood Suicide
Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Chicago's killin'em these days. I guess it's been big, but until a couple years ago did I recognize.
Radius has just dropped
Neighborhood Suicide, an amazing instrumental hip hop journey that flexes his sampling guru-itics as a producer from Chi-city! The new album is a reflection of the city, particularly certain neighborhoods mixed with Radius' personal emotions. The making of this album is heavy stuff. Luckily for us we on the other side with our ears wide open. Expect some breaky-ish, some experimental, lots of MPC classic history! More music

The Crosby Grand Opening Weekend!
Friday, May 23, 2008

Last Night hit off the official grand opening weekend of
The Crosby, a kickin' new venue-restaurant-bookstore-bar in the
Santa Ana Artists Village opened by
Free The Robots. Our boy
Co.Fee and his crew
My Hollow Drum (M.H.D.) were providin' some fresh beats and lucky you, they're droppin' frequent on Thursdays. Be sure to check out Co.fee's new joint,
No Borders.

Some of the hardworkin' chef's bringing you delicious food rollin' out hard til 1:30am! What?! Bookmark it in your brains for your late night growls.

The most appropriate decor; 1 whole wall full of old stereo boomboxes. I love that old chrome looking plastic. Shiny shiny shiny shiny!

The bar bar with lots of Maria candles and of course a fat boombox atop.

More from the M.H.D. crew! Tonight The Crosby will be hosting the art works of Shepard Fairey who will also be spinnin' as DJ Diabetic. The many behind
Obey Giant and tons of other artwork phenomenas. Better get their early, it's free and going to be action packed. Also Saturday, the final night of celebration, will feature Stussy sponsored Turnable Lab, live sets from Nosaj Thing and Free The Robots with others. Too many to name. Be sure to check all that out at The Crosby, 400 N. Broadway in Santa Ana!

Nostalgia 77 One Offs, Remixes & B-Sides!
Wednesday, April 09, 2008
Benedic Lambdin has seriously done a number, I believe 7 to be exact. His latest effort,
One Offs, Remixes, & B-Sides has instantly become one of my favorite albums of '08. The sheer collaborative background of this album, Lambdin's solid production and remixing skill, and the rarities of the Nostalgia 77 Octet all flex the enormous strength of this amazing compilation. I've had this album on some heavy rotation. This double disc is available now via the
Etch Shop as well as the vinyl EP. You're gonna get elusive instrumentals, chill beats and remixes from TM Juke, Bonobo, Povo, and vocals from Corinne Bailey Rae, Beth Rowley, Alice Russell and tons more.

Yitz Is Givin' You Y-LOVE!

We are constantly telling people the difference between hip hop and just radio rapping. We definitely like some of the radio rapping so don't get it twisted, but after a few listens you often want to get away and dive your ears into some consciously written, thought provoking lyrics and beats.
This Is Babylon brings us a bold racial heavy, socio-political wake up call in a diverse style all his own. Much like how Matisyahu brought the reggae-rock and hiphop into one,
Y-Love brings interesting arrangements and sounds packaged under his multilingual lyrics.
Y-Love is very eager to get the message heard, a message with a lot of religious, unifying, and spiritual topics. Check it out and get

Prince Fatty's Survival Of The Fattest!
Thursday, March 27, 2008

The UK's Mike P proved once again of who infact is the fattest. Producer Mike P has brought together his group of dub fatties to form
Prince Fatty. Each member has their own mentionable reputations in jazz, afrobeat, hip hip and dub. Their single is a perfect way to set you off on their sound; lotsa happiness comin' out as they put Hollie Cook's voice over that organ dipped smooth 70s dub beat. Keep your ears open for the horns, they're my favorite part. I particularly like the title of the single,
Milk & Honey, because it's what was waiting for them (Moses & company) at the
promiseland. Also digging the silly quote on their
myspace; "Battling the Forces of Evil with Hippy Reggae." We also got a special remix version for you thanks to the Fatty's label, NYC's
Rasa Music.

Case Of The Mondays With James Pants
Monday, March 24, 2008

I like to think of
James Pants and his new album as a bit of a Cinderella story. He met
Stones Throw head
Peanut Butter Wolf at a rave after his high school prom. From there he would become a signed artist on the Stones Throw roster! James Pants makes a dope electro 80s soul, post funk sound. He doesn't just mix, sample, or spin, he's on the mic, on the keys, strummin' guitars, and hittin' the percussion. I also think there's this mix of ambient with hip hop that I totally dig. To hit off your summer, Pants' new album

Lauryn Hill is Back!!! L Boogie Up In Here
Thursday, January 24, 2008

Spreading rumors is awesome. But I am just as confused...after ten years from her debut album The Miseducation, an Unplugged joint and Fugees-ish comeback, she is actually back? Well for starters she has been busy raising kids I'm sure with Rohan Marley. She also did that song for Surf's Up called
Lose Myself, and little things here and there. But as I was searching through the internet as usual I stumbled upon several articles about an unofficial released album dubbed Ms. Hill. Can someone please tell me what is up with that?
The Album contains 25 "tracks" of remixes, classics, and unreleased stuff. Are you excited yet?
Some are spoken word/flow or whatever you want to call them. We're going to give you a track that you might like...stay tuned for more info about this album. Here's a few hints to when it'll be
released. She supposedly finished a second album but Columbia wouldn't release it on fears of not knowing to market it. Hmm.. read up
here. This looks more like a compilation, I wonder if the new album she made will ever come out. I sure hope so! So she isn't really back...sort of.
Here's the "unofficial" Track list.

I've been trying to get this out for a while but haven't had the chance but today's the day. Last October
Flying Lotus released the 6 track

The Long time hiphop producer has been producing, remixing, and reinventing tracks using various elements of jazz, electronic, ambient, glitch dub rock, and all kinds of other stuff. From Adult Swim to fellow artist remixed tracks, we'd hope that a new album will be droppin' this year. Keep your fingers crossed while you listened to these tracks!

Amplive Remixes Radiohead's In Rainbows!
Friday, December 21, 2007

We got the info a while ago but we're laggin'!
DJ Amplive has reworked, re this and re that the new Radiohead In Rainbows album. The result, RainyDayz Remixes, a special 8-song remixed extravaganza that displays Amp's respect to Radiohead with his textual-ear-brain coordination. To take another band's already awesome album, remix it for a double pile on, and then still give the credit and props right back to Radiohead shows deep appreciation. That's one aspect of what music is (or should be) all about. The album is a digital only download which is slated to drop on the 10th of January, fresh way to begin your new year. Best part: The Album is completely FREE!!!! That's right! If you bought the In Rainbows CD from Radiohead, you can use the confirmation e-mail, forward it to

Our Canadian friends over at
Non-Existent Recordings have recently released Mojib's debut album, Whimsical Lifestyle. Swedish native,
Mojib is a producer/mixer of sorts who has delicately combined pop melodies with different drum elements and synth sounds everywhere. Some of the loops provide for some awesome hiphop/ downtempo vibes with airy vocals over faint piano keys. It's a wide array of musical influences coming from all over and I dig the experimenting. Mojib, in the past, has done remixes of several bands and songs which initially caught my attention. If you got itchin' for some great remixes and mixtape style music,

Barker Block Goes Eclectic With Koop, Alice Russell, and Mocean Worker!
Sunday, November 11, 2007

This "
KCRW Presents" night was another excellent example of the creative efforts of various collaborators involved. We were thoroughly impressed. Parties involved:
KCRW,
Barker Block Lofts,
LearnAboutWine.com, and of course the awesome line-up. As an open house party, The Barker Block Lofts hosted Learn About Wine which well-hashed various a la cartes and an unlimited
Beer & Wine tasting with over 40 wines & microbrews. The
image gallery does no justice to the lofts inside. They were really neat, especially if you have a handle on getting some really amazing furniture. There was also an after party with a DJ spinning, art show and open bar. Before the music there was already an eventful night. This was an all around great way to promote several things in one well planned outdoor "venue."

To the Music! First Up:
Alice Russell sang with special guest
TM Juke which needless to say was nothing short of amazing. The entire set was acoustic and created a great show experience. She was interacting with the audience in a very intimate atmosphere and really having fun. It was pitch clear live.

Next up on the bill was
Mocean Worker or MoWo droppin' funky hiphop induced drum 'n' bass tunes from their summer release
Cinco De MoWo. Lots of Jazz and some Latin sounds were coming from an awesome band which included a bass trumpet and mutiple percussions.

After some short set-up
Koop was up. They performed another awesome set including Tonight, Waltz For Koop, Come To Me, Sumer Sun and I See A Different You! It was longer than the El Rey show with the quality! I never get tired of these songs. They started the set with Koop Islands with a blue lighting set.
Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen was on the microphone and I have to point out her outfit changes. We all think it really made the show that much better. Another beautiful multi-piece jazz orchestraic with lots of great solos and breaks! If you haven't heart any of these bands, we'll hook you up with some tracks, then Go out and get the albums!

Seattle's Blue Scholars Anounce 2 New EPs!
Monday, October 22, 2007

I was exposed to hiphop in high school and since then I couldn't ever listen to the radio garbage gangster rap ever again. The "it has a good beat" just does not cut it for me. We listened to the likes of Planet Asia, High & Mighty, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Heiroglyphics, Tribe, Beat Junkies, De La Soul, Pete Rock, Company Flow, MF Doom, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, J5, Dilated Peoples, etc. etc. It's struggling now as the big shows don't give much room for new artists; Just a bunch of struggling acts with much much talent.
One such talent is Seattle's
Blue Scholars who've been up since '02. Through a thriving underground hiphop scene in Seattle and nearby Portland to a much talked about prevalent duo on the net & print, Geologic and Sabzi are exposing ears to a serious scenery of hip hop. I always say intelligent rhymes can't be touched by money, scandalous women and looking really "cool" at a club.
Rawkus Records, who are responsible for lots of disctractions from studying, went into a joint venture in 2007 with MassLine Media to release BS's latest summer drop, "
Bayani" album. MassLine was started by Sabzi, Geo and some friends in '06. Not a bad start. The Joe Metro EP comes out soon (end of the month) so be lookin' out and the Butter&Gun$ EP will be out before the New Year. Check more News including the

Beastie Boys Best Of Grand Royal 12"s!!!
Monday, October 08, 2007

When you're as big as the
Beastie Boys, you have so many releases, and then releases in other countries, formats for which those releases are released on, and limited this and thats. Then finally (but not the end?) you get the Best Of's. In May, Grand Royal/ Capital released the Best Of Grand Royal 12" Double Vinyl album which you guys probably by now have all heard in some dope club but I wanted to quickly highlight the CD version. It includes 6 additional tracks including "Rootdown" and "Groove Holmes." It's got old stuff and newer stuff. It's basically grabbing some of my favs from different years and albums then remixing them and then releasing them with even more awesome stuff.
This is no doubt one of the best remix albums around and not just for Beastie. It also includes probably the best remix of "Intergalactic" I've ever heard. Okay! We can go on for days about the Beastie but you've heard it all, and if not
Wiki up. Check out these tracks and be sure to pick up the album/LPs!

The GO! Team Continues To Prove Their Youth!
Wednesday, October 03, 2007
The sophomore effort of the
GO! Team is even better than the first album. It's just powerpacked with a crazy array of samples, tambourines and that super catchy playground rock. We would say it perfectly compliments the GO! Team's sound progressively moving to a massive party with the kind of album that you could pop into any CD player for a guaranteed good time.
Proof Of Youth rocks a 36 minute loud soulful often times 70s era funk tv show theme song except in a much hipper extended form. Just lots of
Kick. If you picked up the album, you know
exactly what I mean. Check out these songs now!
The album dropped on September 11th off of Columbia Records here in the U.S. and is being played in heavy rotation all over including mashups and remixes. There are some excellent ones out there! Also check out their

Scott Herren's Back with Prefuse 73's Preparations!
Sunday, September 09, 2007

Barcelona based veteran producer,
Guillermo Scott Heren, has been working on everything for a long time, and now through
Warped Records, he's bringin' out Prefuse 73's next album,
Preparations. The album's single "Class Of 73 Bells" has already created tons of positive reviews for this upcoming album. For those of you who don't know, Prefuse 73 is one of the solo projects of Heren that has many elements and great combinations of jazz, down tempo, hip hop, dance, electronic, and glitch rock. Prefuse has collaborated with some of my favorites including Zero 7, MF DOOM, Beastie Boys and Kazumasa Hashimoto. Heren's incredible multi-instrumental talents and his thorough knowledge and appreciation for the electronics side has created yet another consistent album that boasts a complete mastering of sound.
Preparations drops October 23rd on Warped Records and it is highly recommended that you go pick up the physical album because in addition to the album, you'll also get "Ensembles" which is Heren rocking modern classicals self-composed with clarinets, cellos, pianos and the like. It's definitely going to be a great album. It gets better!! Heren is currently
touring and will be making stops all over the U.S. including the
Troubadour in LA on December 9th. You can go get that single now
here. Check out these tracks and make sure to pick up a copy on the 23rd!

Last Night: Common @ the Jimmy Kimmel Live Show!
Wednesday, August 01, 2007

Jackie Chan is such a sweet sweet sweet man, yet very violent. Yay! The whole night both him and Chris Tucker were showin' mad love to eachother. It was cute as crud! Common opened with "The People" off his new album
Finding Forever, which dropped yesterday. He had a buncha people backin' him up on stage. He went on to perform "U, Black Maybe", "Drivin' Me Wild" along with one of my older favs: "The Light"...Mid performance he did a 5 minute freestyle and I was way impressed. Not cause he could but cause he wasn't flowin with words like duck, chuck and ....

Here are some free tracks to get you a preview!
Yo our flash player went wackasaurus this morning so we changed it up. It's a building project. Any suggestions? hit us up!

It is REALLY feelin' like Summer now!
Sunday, June 17, 2007

Oh the weather is nice and hot now. Chillin' at the beach yesterday was very nice. I had some
Egyptian food yesterday at a friend's Grad party. His family was there and it was the most Egyptians I've seen outside of Discovery Channel's special on
Cairo! We are working on a summer music podcast, or just mix. We've been listenin' to a lot of instrumentals and gettin' back to electronic. Whether you're in summer school, full timin', vacay, or straight bummin' it, here's a really good mix of hiphop, instrumentals, downbeat, bossa, indietronic, and acoustic.
Last night she was Live at the El Ray Theater bustin' some remixes and recent albums. She's one of the top Bossa Nova artists and needless to say is runs in the
family.
An older instrumental hiphop track off of Tony Simon's sophomore "Downtown Science" of the
Ninjatune label.
Sweet Indie-tronic from their 05' release "Datarock Datarock"...This Norwegian duo serves it up dancey.
June's
Spaceland residents playing free on Mondays! Check out this catchy electronic tune.
Off his upcoming "Finding Forever" album droppin' July 31st. Kanye produced this track.
An oldie, but totally awesome, I loved these guys in the 90s
This Tuesday, The Procession and Castledoor will be playing at Spaceland, I am totally digging both of these piano rockin' tracks.
She's done stuff with Elton, Sheryl Crow, and Rufus W. to name a few. Joan Wasser the violinist and sing-songwrite with her band.
Rock-hoppin sample infused straight out of the Chicago indieground.
Breakbeat downtempo grooves from 06's "Days to Come"
I think Los Campesinos means "Country folks" in Spanish. I love the girl/guy vocals from this U.K group. Makes everything so much fun. The awesome indiepopness is droppin' by the U.S. for a couple shows in August but none on the Westcoast =( pooey.
I really like this style of singing, reminds me of the "NEW" 70s chillrock.
One of my older favorite shoe-gazers! This song goes great to a backdrop of summer.
She reminds me of Tilly & the Wall, whom I dig. She also sings for
Cryptacize, they are awesome too.
Acoustic Live version of a great song
Last summer's "This Vital Chapter" from the Aussie indie poppers.
More shoegazey dream folk pop, with Goswell's vocals.
The couple duet have a new album as of April on the Merge label called " Night of the Furies" which is more dancier, more poppier, and subliminal.
First single from "Room on Fire"..it's the Oberserver single!
This guy used to be in hardcore bands...hard to imagine unless you've heard of him. This one is from "Walking Concert", another one of his projects.
Our new buddies at
Stones Throw Records sent us this awesome track from "Yesterday's Universe" which appears to be all Madlib produced with fictional
names/aliases. But from all the new hiphop he's producing, it's super awesome to hear stuff like this jazz drumbeat stuff.
Alright there you have it, 22 songs to start your week off right! Read the news! Lots of good stuff there. Eat more vegetables/fruits. Next week's post will include the health tips, remember those? Okay people comment and let me know you're alive, also what state you are from! Have a great week!!

Above: Monday was the Nike+ iPod College Tour at CSUF. Sean B and John came out to help liven up the campus. Okay so this is part 2 of the Soul/funk/hip/jazz mix.
