Give Us Some Love To Make Music To!
Thursday, July 31, 2008

LA's very own experimental electronic producer, Alfred Darlington aka
Daedelus has just dropped us a brand new album called
Love To Make Music To via Ninjatune. With a handful of releases, Daedelus is back with more unpredictable, groove heavy beats and samples. Some say it is chaos fluxed everywhere but at the same time it's brilliant and track to track you can't really sum it up. Each track progresses into something faster, sometimes clunkier, and basically a mini set if you will. There's a lot of dope tracks and one of my favs is
If We Should (yes typical me) which has Alfred's wife Laura on the mic. Just as I was thinking that they should make more together, they have an album coming out together called The Long Lost. If We Should is just a 4 minute tease of what's to come!
If We ShouldGet Off Your HiHatsP.S. Daedelus will be at
Low End Theory next Wednesday, if you're in LA, do not miss it!

The Crosby Grand Opening Weekend!
Friday, May 23, 2008

Last Night hit off the official grand opening weekend of
The Crosby, a kickin' new venue-restaurant-bookstore-bar in the
Santa Ana Artists Village opened by
Free The Robots. Our boy
Co.Fee and his crew
My Hollow Drum (M.H.D.) were providin' some fresh beats and lucky you, they're droppin' frequent on Thursdays. Be sure to check out Co.fee's new joint,
No Borders.

Some of the hardworkin' chef's bringing you delicious food rollin' out hard til 1:30am! What?! Bookmark it in your brains for your late night growls.

The most appropriate decor; 1 whole wall full of old stereo boomboxes. I love that old chrome looking plastic. Shiny shiny shiny shiny!

The bar bar with lots of Maria candles and of course a fat boombox atop.

More from the M.H.D. crew! Tonight The Crosby will be hosting the art works of Shepard Fairey who will also be spinnin' as DJ Diabetic. The many behind
Obey Giant and tons of other artwork phenomenas. Better get their early, it's free and going to be action packed. Also Saturday, the final night of celebration, will feature Stussy sponsored Turnable Lab, live sets from Nosaj Thing and Free The Robots with others. Too many to name. Be sure to check all that out at The Crosby, 400 N. Broadway in Santa Ana!

What up y'all I just want to drop you guys a new mix that I got early this morning in an e-mail. Apparently this d00d DJ PopsicleStick Horse (no idea what that name means) is resident for a month on UK's Early Edition, London Radio. I couldn't find much info on him but his 37 minute mix has got the likes of Daft Punk, Justice, M.I.A., Cut Copy, Shinichi Osawa, etc. It's pretty rad stuff. You should host your own party tonight! Lob that mix in! DJ PopsicleStick Horse - Early Edition Set 5.08.2008Labels: dj, MIX, UK
Mylene & DJ Periferico Are Telepathique!
Tuesday, April 01, 2008

When I first heard
Telepathique I thought "What? Brazilian Electro-rock?" which in fact was later found to be accurate. Their new EP Love & Lust is out via
The Control Group and has an interesting genre bending, wide range of sound. DJ Periferico goes from percussions to turntables and back in one track, while mixing in Mylene's vocals and making all out danceable rock songs. If anything, these guys are another great example of groups and bands experimenting with sound from everything to D&B to rock with all kindsa noise. Check out these two tracks from the EP!

Where Dinos and Music Meet...First Fridays
Saturday, February 02, 2008

I first learned about
First Fridays after reading a magazine article about a year ago. Ever since then, I've been dying to go see what really goes on at the Natural History Museum after hours (to see if the dinosaurs actually walk around like they did when Ben Stiller was a security guard in Night at the Museum).
First Fridays at the
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, happens once a month and is a night that brings science and music together under one roof. Partnering with
Indie 103.1,
Spaceland Productions, and
dublab, the NHM stays open late and hosts scientific discussions lead by experts in the field (doctors, philosophers, professors, etc.) and up-and-coming musical guests. Past musical guests include former Rage Against the Machine frontman Zach De La Rocha, Steve Aoki/DJ Kid Millionaire,
Busdriver, Matmos, Ghostland Observatory, Plaid,
Deerhoof, and
Sea Wolf.
First Fridays did not disappoint with their most recent event on February 1. Headlining the night was lady MC
Kid Sister and
A-Trak, the youngest person to ever win DMCs World DJ Championship (at the sweet age of 15). An almost surreal setting, the performance took place in the North American Mammals Hall, filled with permanent exhibits featuring sea lions, elk, deer, rams, etc. (just think of the cover of Interpol's
Our Love to Admire). A-Trak began the performance with a short set, opening with non other than Kanye West's "Stronger." After a few songs from A-Trak, his touring partner and girlfriend Kid Sister came out to give a high energy set, performing hits such as "Beeper", "Pro Nails", and "Let Me Bang." The night ended with an hour long DJ set by A-Trak that included mash-ups of songs ranging from old school hip-hop (the Pharcyde, House of Pain, etc.), 80's ("Groove is in the Heart" by Deee-lite, "Lookout Weekend" by Debbie Deb), to
M.I.A.,
Midnight Juggernauts and Jay-Z.
Just a little more about Kid Sister and A-Trak. Kid Sister hails from Chicago and recently signed to
Downtown Records, home of Spank Rock and
Justice. Her brother, J2K, is one half of the duo
Flosstradamus. Canada-native A-Trak is the co-creator/owner of the record label
Fool's Gold, brother of
Chromeo's Dave 1, and has served as the DJ for Kanye West. West made a surprise stage appearance at the Cool Kids/Kid Sister/A-Trak concert held last week at the Natural History Museum in New York.
For all that live or will be visiting the So. Cal area, the next event of the First Fridays series will be held on March 7 - headlining the event will be Why? and
YACHT.
General admission is $9, students with ID is $6.50, and admission is free for NHM members.

Your Clubbin' Weekend Needed This!
Sunday, January 13, 2008

Whether you need to brush up on your dancing skills in the living room, or the club DJ couldn't "cut" it for you last night, we got you
covered. And Yes, we've had our moments with rap song-to-song fade in/out DJ sets and lighting that makes you sit and calculate how cheap it all costs at your local party store. Luckily for us there's
Mark Farina! He's done up over a dozen releases but we wanted to touch up on his latest,
Live In Tokyo. This 72 minute beat-for-beat dance stream packed album was recorded live last summer in Tokyo and released few months ago from the underground giants
Om Records (Samantha James, Sessions, Colette).
He's made some sweet selections on this album including Myungho Choi, Dan Cummings and Leon Louder with some of that rad organ keyboard throughout. This is definitely one of best dance electronic albums and just another everyday boasting of Farina's skills. Head on over to his
site to hear and see more including Muchroom Jazz, Session mixes etc. Also get this album now
here. And of course we got some of them tracks for you to sample. Get some of that chill funk now!
