Late one night last year Laura Veirs recorded her wonderfully folky EP, Two Beers Veirs. Playing old traditional covers close to her heart, this five-song sheds some light on the inspiration to her calm yet full Veirsian style you can find on Carbon Glacier or Year of Meteors. Teaming up again with producer Tucker Martine, Veirs picks up her banjo (as well as her standard classical) plays these old classics with an inspired heart. This release definitely makes me look forward to her forthcoming album July Flame.
Laura Veirs just finished a residency at Laurelthirst Pub in Portland, Oregon, teaming up with members of The Decemberists, The Old Believers, among other Portland bands, and is playing a few dates on the west coast coming up in the next couple months. I had the chance to grab a pint and see her play some of my favourites, as well as the tracks off Two Beers Veirs, and it definitely got my feet dancing at the bar. If you get a chance to see her, she lays it down on the banjo like the greats!
