So I just discovered these two guys, thanks to the VIP section of Paste Magazine. They both play a bluesy form of music, with Whitmore staying true to the blues form with the melancholy lyrics and his deep gospel-esque voice.
The opening riff of 'Who Stole the Soul' off of 'Animals in the Dark' immediately gives a sense of calm. His first two lines hit really deep, asking who stole the soul and who stole the heart. A nice piece of orchestration comes in at the end to transition into the more heavy hitting ending. By heavy-hitting I mean literally since he is strumming his guitar harder and intensifies his voice, but also metaphorically since this song as a happy ending. He finds his spark back, and you can hear the sound of his shuffling feet.
Jeremy Fisher's 'Kiss the Moon' off the album 'Back Porch Spirtuals,' came off an album where he is also trying a blues-esque record, but this song doesn't fit that mold. And it's actually why it stood out, and why I liked it. It's pretty much at the other end of the spectrum. But this song had a cuteness, like with the girl harmonizing on the chorus. It's catchy, upbeat and a nice contrast to the song above. So I hope you enjoy both!
