Checkout Your Local Los Angeles Farmer's Market!

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Farmers' Markets have never been so fabulous dah-ling. Talk about LA stepping out, skip the lines at the club on Saturday night and get up early with the fabulous people and muse over heirloom apples, purple pee-wee potatoes, colored carrots, black kale, farm-fresh eggs and wild mushrooms. Eating well is hip, knowing your farmer is a must, and understanding where you food comes from has never been so chic. Health-nut, meet fashionista. You'll both be at home at your local farmers' market - lookin' damn good and eating some of the best fruits and vegetables that local Californian farms have to offer.

Here's a run-down of a few of LA's best farmers markets around the City...
Wednesday - Santa Monica: 3rd & Arizona / 8:30-1:30pm
Vibe: Jaw-dropping if you're looking for the best local produce in LA or anywhere else for that matter- it's arguably the best farmers' market in the nation.

Thursday - Westwood Farmers' Market (at the Vetrens Garden off Sepulveda just north of Wilshire and the 405)
Vibe: Totally escape LA and wander into the Vet's Garden. Which is not only filled with a great little market full of some solid staple items, but is a wonderful paradise to behold, (there's even a parrot refuge to gawk at!) made captivatingly beautiful by US Veterans.

Saturday - Torrance : 2200 Crenshaw Blvd (Wilson Park) / 8-1pm
Vibe: Chillaxed! Lots-o-produce, friendly vibe, prepared foods and crafts. Santa Monica: 3rd/ Arizona 8-1pm Vibe: Organic-opia. Sustainable Farming and pesticide free food never tasted so good.

Sunday - Santa Monica : Main Street / Ocean Park / 9:30-1pm
Vibe: Families love this one-stop shop: salivate over incredible breakfast options as you pick up your weekly staples, get your kids face painted or put them on a pony for a pony ride. Take a gander at some cool jewelry and clothing while you wait.

Hollywood Farmers' Market: Ivar/Sunset (block north of Sunset) / 8-1pm.
Vibe: Fruits and veggies steal the limelight away from the glitzy and glamourous. If you live in LA, keep in mind that there are 90 markets that occur here each week. Which means that a) you have no excuse not to support local CA agriculture and get food thats picked ripe and ready to eat, and b) that this is my personal fav list and your market may not have been highlighted.

Check out here for more farmers' market listings. Get out there, put your fedora hat on, toss that Moroccan scarf carelessly around your neck, grab your organic cotton reusable bag and eat good this week!
