Let Us Not Neglect Anime Music!

Thursday, May 29, 2008

I have a buddy who listens to nothing but Anime Music, soundtracks, etc. In Japan and elsewhere, popular artists are often dropped in the score, where as here Beyonce and Mandy Moore don't really contribute. That's where I realize how different Anime really is where even the music is a completely different thing. Often times when I was listening with my friend in his car, I would find myself trying to imagine what the anime was about. Also keep in mind Anime music can do rock to electronic to jazz and hip hop all with or without vocals, while being in feature lengths and episodics. It's pretty free and quite a range.

I am not well versed however a friend did show me an anime in which I thought was completely awesome and a very fresh idea. Samurai Champloo (chanpuru is a Japanese term meaning "to mix") is an animation created by Shinichiro Watanabe, the d00d who brought you Cowboy Bebop. It mixes comedy + hiphop/turntablism + the "traditional" anime style characters and the timeliness of Japan during the age of Samurais. The culture portrayed seems very realistic in a sense of how people and life was during that period of time. My favorite part is when this idiot Samurai has an entourage and before he speaks, one of his men starts to beat box. Utterly unique.

Let's get to the music! There are 4 full length soundtracks for the 26 episodic. That's a ton! Lots of the soundtrack is produced and mixed by the Nujabes, Force of Nature, Fat Jon, and Tsutchie. It's pretty killer. Anyways got a hold of the soundtracks from a friend and wanted to show you how rad this anime was just through the music. The turntable noise transitions are perfect. Check the tracks for a taste. You can pick up the DVDs here. And check it out on Adult Swim.

Battle Cry - Nujabes ft. Shing02
Intro on Youtube, totally dope.

Sneak Chamber - Tsutchie

Transcendence - Nujabes + Fat Jon

Let us not neglect anime music, what with the cartoons blowing up these days in the U.S., the youngens know more about that hip joint that YOU do! Oh snap indeed.
