I think I've developed a newfound jealousy of Ali Youngblood - kid sister to Black Kid's frontman Reggie Youngblood. Not only does she get to sing with her cool older brother in what
Rolling Stone has called one of the ten best new bands of 2008, but the girl, well actually, all of 'em, who don't play the drums or guitar, know how to get down.
Tonight,
Black Kids performed a sold-out show at the renowned
Bowery Ballroom -possibly one of the best venues in NYC. It's because it has an intimate atmosphere that makes show-going fun, unlike other venues that make you feel as though you have to elbow your way through a battlefield, or feel like an absolute loner because of that invisible circle of empty space all 'round you. Not that I've ever had that experience before.
Anyway, the point is, Black Kids put on a simple, straightforward but fun show. It was the kind of show that made you feel good about making your way out on a Sunday night to go see them despite having work in the morning. They danced and played music that made you forget any of the thoughts and worries and stresses muddling in your head. And that is what makes for a great show.
The highlights of the short set (short, because they really only have four songs) were "I've Underestimated my Charm (again)" and of course "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance." check it out here
And though this video doesn't show it, Ali (heck, all of 'em) can dance - the type of happy dancing that makes you want to get up and jump around and scream and laugh, all without inhibition. It's good stuff man. And the Youngblood's voices (why they didn't use that as their band name is a mystery) along with Dawn Watley's blended harmoniously. It's what you'd expect from siblings (plus one).
If you get a chance it's
a show worth going to. But unless you live in England or Scotland, you're pretty much out of luck for these next few months.
