Watching the Trials of Van Occupanther...Midlake

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Midlake is one of those bands that remain under the radar despite receiving critical acclaim for their 2006 full-length album The Trials of Van Occupanther, released by Bella Union Records. Dubbed as one of the "bands to watch," Midlake has caught the ears of some very prominent people such as Bella Union Records owner and Cocteau Twin bassist Simon Raymonde, and skateboarder/star of NBC's "My Name is Earl" Jason Lee. Lee went on to direct the music video for "Balloon Maker" and continues to promote the band.

Hailing from Denton, Texas, Midlake's sound is reminiscent of and takes a strong influence from 1970s rock, and bands such as
Radiohead and Jethro Tull. The Trials of Van Occupanther has a lush sound that provides a perfect soundtrack for a rainy day or walk in the woods.

Be sure to listen to their songs below, and check out their music videos - each provides a story to accompany the song, most of which are set in centuries past.
